Meet the Founder!
Hi! My names Sinead - I'm a scientist based in Ireland with a Bachelors Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and I am pursuing a Masters degree in Science and Health Communications. My passion is everyone having access to clear, easy to understand information about the health and science issues that interests or impacts them.
I'll have regular contributors to the blog, talking about their own passions and interests in plain, easy to understand language, and their 'about me' section will be just down below! I hope you enjoy your time here, and that you leave understanding something just a little bit better.
Hi! Its me! During my undergrad lab project, when my protein gels were not working and I was ready to murder someone
Why Science Made Simple?
When I was 18 years old, at the very start of the COVID-19 lockdowns and isolation, I was diagnosed with PCOS.
Throughout my teenage years I had struggled with my period, my weight and other general health issues that no doctor seemed to take seriously or be concerned about. I spent hours on the internet trying to figure out what was wrong with me.
I think 'Reasons for missing my period' and 'calorie deficit and still not loosing weight?' were googled at least once a week for 8 years. At one point, I was told to stop coming to my GP because what was happening to me wouldn't be an issue until I wanted to have kids. I didn't listen, and kept fighting.
By May of 2020, I finally had my diagnosis - Insulin Resistance PCOS.
I had come across PCOS during my internet search - but hormone tests that had been done had apparently come back clear, so when the main clinical symptom being 'high testosterone levels/ hormonal imbalance' came up, I had presumed that my normal blood tests ruled out that diagnosis.
So, I took the metformin that I had been prescribed and did start to see an improvement - but after a time, I hit a plateau and eventually had to admit I was still struggling with much of the same issues I had been facing.
It wasn't until the end of my second year in college when I started being able to read scientific journals about PCOS and understand what they were actually saying - investigations into what it meant, what was happening and more importantly - what I could do to improve my situation. There's so many gimmicks and self-help articles out there, but with my ability to actually read published journals I was able to determine if what I wanted to try was safe, or if it would even be effective. Would spearmint tea actually help my bloating and associated sugary cravings the minute it hit 3pm, or was this just something someone was trying to sell? (Spoiler, it does actually help)
I firmly believe it shouldn't take two years of a science based degree to be able to understand the basic science behind what's happening to you. Coupled with what I saw happening online during the pandemic, and the misinformation associated with the basic scientific principles like mRNA vaccines and PCR tests that I now take for granted - I became passionate about easy access to complex issues, that would allow people to make informed decisions about what was happening around them.
Me and my friends are also passionate about what we do - not only as an occupation but as an interest. Frequently we've visited and sat in each others lectures and papers because what we're studying genuinely fascinates us and we want to share that with the public.
Then Simpli Science Gals was born.
